Why Jazz Happened

The sweet notes of smooth jazz are well-known to anyone who’s delved into Kansas City’s history, but jazz is still evolving today.

On Thursday's Up to Date, we’ll talk with Marc Myers, author of Why Jazz Happened, about how world events have helped shape the sound of jazz, as it has has grown and changed since World War II.

Marc Myers is a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal, where he writes about jazz, rock, soul, and rhythm & blues as well as art and architecture. He blogs daily at www.JazzWax.com, winner of the Jazz Journalists Association's Blog of the Year Award.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
