Flu Season Picks Up, Vaccine Still Available

The nation's midsection is a hot spot for influenza right now, and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment says there’s still time to be protected by a flu shot.

In Kansas, flu season normally peaks in February.  This year, there haven’t been as many cases as usual, but activity has been steadily increasing the last several weeks.

3.5 percent of all patients at flu monitoring sites during the week ending March 3 had influenza like illnesses.  

Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado and Illinois area all listed by the CDC as having widespread flu activity.

KDHE Secretary Robert Moser says the types of seasonal flu currently found in Kansas are covered by this year’s vaccine. 

The vaccine is recommended for anyone six months of age and older.
