Conference tournament basketball begins for the three area major schools today. Missouri plays in its first Southeastern Conference tournament game tonight in Nashville as the number-6 seed.  In Kansas City at the Big 12 tournament, top-seeded Kansas plays this afternoon at 2, then K-State takes the floor tonight at 6.

The Big 12 brackets are set for the men's tournament in Kansas City.

Four basketball games took place last Friday at the St. Mary’s High School gymnasium in Independence for the last time. 

The Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph announced last month the school will close at the end of the school year because of declining enrollment.  It has been around for 160 years.

The captain of the cheerleaders, a senior, shares her thoughts. Her name is Emily Echlin, the daughter of KCUR sports contributor Greg Echlin.

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have a contract agreement, according to several media reports.

The Kansas City Chiefs broke their eight-game losing streak yesterday, beating the Carolina Panthers  27-21. The win comes in the wake of Chiefs linebacker, Jovan Belcher's death.

Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times around 8 a.m. Saturday, drove to the team's training facility, thanked coaches for supporting him, walked away and shot himself in the head, police said.

A Kansas City Chiefs player shot and killed himself at Arrowhead Stadium early Saturday morning after fatally shooting his girlfriend.

Police say linebacker Jovan Belcher, 25, shot the woman at her home, then drove to a training facility at the stadium just east of Kansas City, Mo. When police arrived at the scene, according to reporter Laura Ziegler of member station KCUR, they found Belcher with a pistol to his head, thanking team coaches for everything they had done for him.

At least one local college football team is on the brink of a perfect season. But as Victor Wishna explains in this month's edition of "A Fan's Notes," that storybook ending is in jeopardy, thanks to a cover.
