Last week, visiting instructor Héctor Casanova Cinderhouse was at his desk in the illustration department at the Kansas City Art Institute, contemplating a small pile of plans for the first phase of a mural project at Scarritt Elementary School in the historic Northeast.
Artist Allan Winkler’s whimsical paper and metal cut-outs of people and animals are instantly recognizable. A 1975 graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, his style has been described as "deliberately naïve."
Mural artist Alexander Austin has made his mark on the outside of buildings across Kansas City. There's a tribute to performer Michael Jackson at 18th and Troost; larger than life musicians and baseball players in Kansas City's history in the Power & Light district; and a memorial to civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. at Linwood and Troost.
