Love Songs

Ah, love. Many musicians have been inspired by it — whether or not their stories had a happy ending. As we gear up for the most romantic day of the year, we listen to classical music from the Romantic Era.

The Love Hangover

Feb 14, 2013

In the world of music, so many songs center around one common subject: love. But for those who aren't singing the praises of romance, there are plenty of songs about the darker and more cynical side of love. Richard Alwyn joins Central Standard to share his favorite songs for the lonely heart and to talk about his live event, The Love Hangover.

Central Standard and Walt Bodine Show producer Andrea Silenzi revisits some of the best works by legendary singer Etta James.

"When Etta James passed away I decided it would be a good thing to sit down and listen to a lot of her best songs," Silenzi says. "She's probably best known for her song, 'At Last.' "

Favorite Love Songs: "Carinhoso"

Feb 13, 2012

KC Currents' Sylvia Maria Gross tells us about a Brazilian anthem for unrequited love.

"She says 'my heart, I don't know why, beats happily when I see you,' " Gross translates the Portuguese lyrics of the song "Carinhoso" to English.

She continues alongside the singer's voice, " 'And my eyes will smile and follow you down the road, but still, you run away from me.' "

Favorite Love Songs: "Moonglow"

Feb 13, 2012

Reporter Dan Verbeck talks about a romantic theme from the 1955 movie "Picnic."

"The movie was filmed mostly in Kansas in 1955," Verbeck said.

"The 'Moonglow' theme has a special tingly quality to it. There are two people dancing in a small park beside a stream at a Labor Day picnic," he said. "My wife grew up in a rural town about ten miles from where the picnic scene was filmed."

Favorite Love Songs: "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber

Feb 13, 2012

Continuing our series on love songs, KCUR announcer Danie Alexander shares a bit about the audio intensity of a piece by composer Samuel Barber.

"It's so lush. It starts out so beautifully," Alexander says with an energy that rivals the song. "It builds, and then right at the climax, it hangs."

"A pause," she says carefully, speaking more slowly than previously. "And then it drops right into the end of the song."

This song made a lasting impression. It shows in her eyes.

Favorite Love Songs: "And I Love Her" by the Beatles

Feb 13, 2012

Continuing our series on love songs... Up to Date's Steve Kraske takes us back to a Beatles classic.

He barely needs time to consider the question.

"This is an easy one for me, it's 'And I Love Her,' by the Beatles," he says. "I don't have any special sort of memory attached to it, I've just always loved this song."

The question was, 'what's your favorite love song?'

Why? That answer comes easily as well.

Favorite Love Songs: "My Guy" by Mary Wells

Feb 10, 2012

Continuing our series on love songs... KCUR's General Manager Patty Cahill tells how a song by Mary Wells sends her back to memories of her first love.

"My favorite long song is "My Guy" by Mary Wells," Cahill said.

"He may not be a movie star," she sings, pauses and mutters 'I wish I could sing,' then continues the tune, "but when it comes to being happy, we are."
