Favorite Love Songs: "Sunday Kind of Love" by Etta James

Central Standard and Walt Bodine Show producer Andrea Silenzi revisits some of the best works by legendary singer Etta James.

"When Etta James passed away I decided it would be a good thing to sit down and listen to a lot of her best songs," Silenzi says. "She's probably best known for her song, 'At Last.' "

Favorite Love Songs: "Carinhoso"

KC Currents' Sylvia Maria Gross tells us about a Brazilian anthem for unrequited love.

"She says 'my heart, I don't know why, beats happily when I see you,' " Gross translates the Portuguese lyrics of the song "Carinhoso" to English.

She continues alongside the singer's voice, " 'And my eyes will smile and follow you down the road, but still, you run away from me.' "

Favorite Love Songs: "Moonglow"

Reporter Dan Verbeck talks about a romantic theme from the 1955 movie "Picnic."

"The movie was filmed mostly in Kansas in 1955," Verbeck said.

"The 'Moonglow' theme has a special tingly quality to it. There are two people dancing in a small park beside a stream at a Labor Day picnic," he said. "My wife grew up in a rural town about ten miles from where the picnic scene was filmed."

Favorite Love Songs: "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber

Continuing our series on love songs, KCUR announcer Danie Alexander shares a bit about the audio intensity of a piece by composer Samuel Barber.

"It's so lush. It starts out so beautifully," Alexander says with an energy that rivals the song. "It builds, and then right at the climax, it hangs."

"A pause," she says carefully, speaking more slowly than previously. "And then it drops right into the end of the song."

This song made a lasting impression. It shows in her eyes.
