Highway 71: Connecting The Metro, Dividing Neighborhoods

Highways connect people and places with a speed we've come to take for granted. But highways also have a history of dividing and sometimes nearly obliterating the very communities they intersect.

Perhaps the most controversial example of this phenomenon in Kansas City is U.S. Highway 71.

Why Did The Turtle Cross The Road?

The box turtle is making its way across Missouri in search of love. The problem? It's trying to cross the road, and it's not all-too speedy.

It’s that time of year when turtles become easy targets on Missouri and Kansas highways.

Turns out that male box turtles don’t know any better. They’re just out looking for mates, and that journey has them crossing busy highways where too often they become road kill.

In the final portion of Tuesday's Up to Date, Steve Kraske talks with a biologist from the Missouri Department of Conservation about those all too vulnerable turtles.

Kansas City Adds Another Interstate

You might have noticed a few changes while driving along US 71 Highway. For instance, you may have realized while traveling south that the sign for Grandview has been replaced with a sign for Joplin. This is but one of several changes that will take place over the next few months for US 71, which will soon become Interstate 49.

Economic Toll Taken On Missouri Bridges, Highways

Jefferson City, MO – You won't see nearly as many bulldozers and paving trucks working to fix and expand Missouri highways. The upcoming five-year construction program approved today cuts away two thirds of what was spent last year.

What was approved by Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission barely has funds to take care of what's here now.

Kansas City, MO – A Missouri man has just finished a task that has driven him for the last twelve years. He's traveled every mile of every state highway. He was on the last leg of the journey this week, up in Kansas City's Northland, on Missouri Route One. It's better known as Antioch Road in Clay County. KCUR's Dan Verbeck was in the passenger seat and filed this account.
