In another time, the opening of a new mosque in Johnson County, Kansas, may not have attracted hundreds of people from a wide array of backgrounds. But some say these are extraordinary times.

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, incidents that reflect bias against Muslims grew by 57% last year.

Crowds streamed into the new classic masjid, Arabic for mosque, at the Islamic Center of Johnson County.

Overland Park Voters OK Sales Tax Extension

An initial vote count appears to show Overland Park, Kan. voters have approved extending a 1/8 cent sales tax for 10 years, financing street repair and construction.

Unofficial returns on the mail-in ballot show some 33,000 ballots cast with 72 percent approving it.   Nearly $70 million will have been collected when the current tax expires in 2014. 

“We keep this money all segregated to make sure we spend the entire amount  on specifically what we told them we would use it for," says Carl Gerlach, mayor of Overland Park.

City and state officials were on hand Thursday to lift the shovels during a ceremonial groundbreaking for Prairiefire, a new Overland Park development at 135th Street between Nall and Lamar. The site includes a natural history museum.
