Wikipedia's Gender Gap

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. Research by the Wikimedia Foundation determined that less than 15% of its contributors identify as female, which creates a great disparity in the popular online encyclopedia's content. We discuss what organizations in Kansas City and around the world are doing to fix this problem.

Guests:

  • Siko Bouterse is Director of Community Resources at the Wikimedia Foundation, which serves as Wikipedia’s support structure.
  • Paula Rose is involved with Art+Feminism, an group that organizes Wikipedia edit-a-thons worldwide.

If you want to get involved, You can attend a Wikipedia edit-a-thon this Saturday, March 28from noon to 4:30 at the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. It's free and open to women, women-identified, and women allies (that means you, guys!)

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
Slow news days are a thing of the past. As KCUR’s news director, I want to cut through the noise, provide context to the headlines, and give you news you can use in your daily life – information that will empower you to make informed decisions about your neighborhood, your city and the region.
