Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Council stayed late this evening, to discuss filling the vacant 4th District council seat. The full council was unable to arrive at a tie-breaking method or agree on a specific date for its next vote. Though the council couldn't decide, George Blackwood will be the next councilman. The other finalist, Janice Ellis, withdrew her name from nomination.
The Kansas House unveiled its plan for increasing the amount spent on public schools today. It calls for the addition of about $500 million over three years with no reduction for rural districts. Alan Rupe, the attorney who sued the state over funding on behalf of two school districts says if the plan passes, the districts will sue again before the ink dries on the governor's signature.
Kansas House Democrats and moderate Republicans banded together to pass a revised abortion clinic regulation bill by one vote today. The bill, to the disappointment of Kansans for Life, also includes most outpatient surgery facilities. Kansans for Life tried to defeat the bill this morning, saying a loophole would allow clinics to avoid state oversight by gaining accreditation from a recognized health organization.
Doug Albrecht, CEO of St. Louis's Centric Group says he asked several MU curators to seek more answers about Quin Snyder's resignation or remove his name from the Mizzou practice gym. Albrecht paid $500,000 for the naming rights. Albrecht is a close friend of both Snyder and Gary Link, who Snyder says was sent to him with a "quit or get fired" ultimatum.
