Before tossing that fuzzy sour cream or the moldy bell peppers from your refrigerator, ponder the bigger picture.

Food finds its way to more landfills than plastic or paper in the United States, making it the largest single source of waste in the country.

This week, KCUR-based Harvest Public Media is taking a deeper look into what food we throw away in “Tossed Out: Food Waste in America,” a six-part public radio series that culminates with a 30-minute TV special at 8 p.m. Friday on KCPT.

All this talk about slimy food has us wondering what you’re throwing away — and perhaps what you’ve put off throwing away.

Tell KCUR: What’s the oldest thing in your fridge? Would you eat it?

Tweet your funky food photos and confessions (how much mold is too much mold for you?) with the #TellKCUR hashtag  or go to our Facebook page and leave your answer in a comment.

You also can leave us a message at 816-235-2881. Or email your moldy fridge fodder and photos to social@kcur.org.

We’ll share your stories Thursday online and on the air during KCUR’s daily talk show Central Standard, which starts at 10 a.m.

Tell KCUR is part of an initiative to engage the community and shine a light on your experiences and opinions.  We’ll ask a new question every week and then share your feedback on the air and online. Everyone has knowledge and insight to share. Be a source for KCUR and let us know more about your expertise
