Tapes Inconclusive In Fire Truck Fatality

Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Fire Department has released tapes of radio communications involved in an accident in which a 7 year old boy was struck and killed by a fire truck near ninth and Euclid. Some had questioned whether the fire truck's siren was activated when it struck the boy.

Was the siren blaring when Obarimomoya Nkani, seven, stepped in front of the fire truck and died?

In the first response transmission, no sirens are heard. Then they are clearly audible in two transmissions from two different vehicles... which were about 10 seconds apart. A half-minute later came the call for an ambulance..

The fire department says the tapes prove that sirens were in use, but do not, at least with ordinary listening methods, identify what vehicle or vehicles had the sirens activated.
