Urban gardens like the Kauffman Memorial Garden in Kansa City are especially beneficial to the environment when populated with native plant species.

Segment 1: How Kansas City is protecting its digital data from hackers.

In light of recent cyberattacks in Atlanta and Baltimore, data security is becoming a larger focus of municipal governments across the country. Today, we looked at Kansas City's own data security, and some of the measures the city has taken to protect against ransomware and other harmful technologies.

Segment 2, beginning at 24:56: The benefits of incorporating native plants into urban spaces.

With warmer weather approaching, you may have noticed the trees and shrubs in your neighborhood sprouting back to life. But which of those plants are native species helping the environment, and why should communities incorporate other indigenous blooms into their landscapes? Today, we learned about smart landscaping, and how developers are harnessing nature to build healthier cities.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
