Pools Across The KC Metro Are Set To Open This Weekend — If They Get Warm Enough

Kansas City Parks and Recreation plan to open their water parks, pools and spraygrounds, some with improvements, on Saturday. But first, the water has to be warm enough.

Doug Schroeder, Director of Golf Services and Aquatics, says they can’t open the pools until water temperatures reach 70 degrees.

“We have concerns, especially with the weather for the next few days not being that warm and with the chances of rain, that the pool temperatures might not get up to the required 70 degrees,” says Schroeder.

Once waters do reach the required temperature, Schroeder says swimmers at Brush Creek Community Center have some updates to look forward to. Thanks to a grant from the Public Improvement Advisory Committee, the pool now has a new frog-shaped slide, a basketball goal, deck umbrellas, a kiddie stream, as well as, improvements to existing features.

Brush Creek Community Center also refinished stainless steel gutters around their pool.

This summer, Parks and Rec is also testing a new pilot program at Line Creek Community Center and Bay Water Park. If you sign-up and complete a swim lesson, you get a free pass to that facility for the rest of the summer. Schroeder says if the program is successful, it will be implemented at facilities.

Schroeder also says that they have been working for about six weeks getting the pools ready.

“It takes some time, but it’s a pretty simple process,” Schroeder says.

The process includes cleaning all surfaces, filling the pools with water and checking mechanical equipment like pumps and filters. After the water is balanced and the chlorine levels are correct, the pool goes through an inspection from the health department.
