Greg Orman, the independent candidate running for U.S. Senate from Kansas, is worth between $21.5 million and $86 million, according to a personal finance filing made Monday.
Orman, 45, is Olathe businessman who is running against incumbent GOP Sen. Pat Roberts, who is trailing in the most recent poll.
The 38-page Orman report also showed that he has earned between $917,000 and $4.5 million in income since the beginning of 2013. The range of Orman’s wealth is so broad because it comes mostly from investments.
Orman has come under scrutiny in recent weeks because of his connection to Rajat Gupta, a former Goldman Sachs board member convicted of securities fraud and fined more than $18 million. Orman served as Gupta’s representative on a two-person board of a Cayman Island private equity partnership, the Topeka Capital Journal reported.
The fund was not involved in the insider trading case and Orman served on the board for less than a year, the newspaper reported.
“Greg grew up poor with a single mom. He’s someone who has worked hard and been successful," said Sam Edelen of the Orman campaign. "Greg understands what real people are going through.”
Roberts reported last month that his assets are worth between $1.6 million and $4 million.
Orman’s disclosure raises more questions than answers, said Corry Bliss, Robert’s campaign manager.
“Mr. Orman is funneling millions of his own dollars into this race, and Kansas voters deserve to know exactly where that money comes from,” Bliss said.
If elected in November, Orman would be among the wealthiest in Congress, which has a majority of millionaires, according to Ballotpedia.
