KU Gets Number One Seed

The NCAA men's basketball tournament in Kansas City this week will include Kansas as a number-one seed, but the Jayhawks might want to forget their last trip to Kansas City as a top seed.

This year marks KU's first trip to Kansas City as a number-one seed since '95 when the Jayhawks lost to Virginia in Kansas City.

Only once during Roy Williams’ time as coach at the University of Kansas did the Jayhawks play the NCAA tournament in Kansas City.  It was the 1995 appearance.

Williams was irritated before KU's Sweet 16 game against Virginia.  He was constantly asked about KU's advantage in Kansas City and what was being written about him. 

"I was even called in the paper if I have a Napoleonic complex," said Williams in '95 at Kemper Arena. 

"I didn't even know what the crap that was.  Anyway it said I was getting a little testy about that question. I guess the reason I got a little testy because I only had to answer it 1,331 times," Williams added.

Greg Gurley, now a commentator on the Jayhawks Radio Network, played on that team in '95.

"It was my last game as a college basketball player and it was awful," said Gurley last week.

The estimated tip-off time for KU's Friday night game against Western Kentucky is around 8:50.

K-State, seeded number 4 in the West, will play either Boise State or LaSalle Friday afternoon around 2:10. 

The Tigers were sent to Lexington, Kentucky, and will play Colorado State Thursday night at 8:20.
