A manhunt continues in Kansas City, Kan., for a suspect or suspects who wounded a Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy early Wednesday morning.
The deputy stopped at a gas station in the 4400 block of Shawnee Drive around 1 a.m. His shift had just ended, and he was in uniform when he was shot during an apparent robbery attempt.
Two persons of interest were apprehended around 7:15 a.m., says Amber Hickerson, public information officer for the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department. Neighbors were advised to use extra caution Wednesday morning as additional suspects could still be at large. Overland Park, Lenexa and Kansas City, Mo., police were called in to aid in the manhunt.
The Kansas City Star is reporting the search effort has since been shut down, but at 2:30 p.m. Hickerson could not confirm if any additional suspects had been taken into custody.
"We don't exactly have a correct number of people," says Hickerson. "Even the two parties we have in custody are just people of interest. We can't say they are connected or involved for sure."
Lt. Kelli Bailiff with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office says the deputy who was shot remains in critical condition but that the department is "very optimistic" he will survive.
