Kansas City, MO – It's well known that city councilman Alvin Brooks is a former police officer and founder of the crime-fighting organization Move Up. For decades, he's gotten up at all hours of the night to visit homicide scenes, comfort families and even accompany criminals turning themselves into the police. Former city auditor Mark Funkhouser has significant experience too, his analysis of crime data and response times have helped the police department improve its service. But as candidates for mayor of Kansas City, KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross reports that neither has offered specific strategies to fight crime, even though the city's homicide rate has spiked over the past two years.
