Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Council this week voted to approve a more restrictive billboard ordinance. Councilman John Sharp proposed the bill and says it places limits based on size and location. Sharp says no billboards will be torn down, but new billboards are prohibited unless within six hundred sixty feet of the right of way of highways and only on land zoned for industrial use.
John Sharp: it would reduce the allowable height...prohibit digital sign faces, and require the maintenance of billboards.
City Councilman Bill Skaggs cast the lone vote against the ordinance. Skaggs says he's concerned the issue will be taken to court because it's so restrictive. Next week, the Olathe City Council is expected to revisit a proposed ordinance similar to the one passed by the Kansas City Council.
