Kansas Agency Encourages A New Black Friday Tradition

Nov 29, 2013

A Kansas agency is urging black families talk to sit down and interview their family members on Friday. The Kansas African American Affairs Commission is calling the oral history project called “New Black Friday.”

“Rather than spending the day in a shopping mall and the family bonding after Thanksgiving holiday by spending lots of money, we thought it would be a good idea for middle schoolers and other students to interview an elder over the holiday season,” says KAAAC executive director, Mildred Edwards.

After the interview, participants are encouraged to write and send it.  The commission will compile the essays, and Edwards says it will add to the history of African American’s in Kansas.
