From a targeted shooting in Olathe to the president's so-called "travel ban," tensions over race, culture and religion are high. Today, we delve into two experiences in the Muslim community and learn what living in Trump's America has been like for Islamic people. Then, piano legend Herbie Hancock shares memories about the beginning of his jazz career and explains what today's young musicians are bringing to the art.

Wajahat Ali is the keynote speaker at the Crescent Peace Society's 21st Annual Eid Celebration and Awards Dinner at the Overland Park Marriott at 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 13. For more information, visit CrescentPeace.org.

Herbie Hancock performs at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 12. For ticketing information, visit KauffmanCenter.org.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
