Millions of Americans are evicted every year because they can’t make the rent. For poor families already struggling with finances, the repercussions of being evicted can be crushing.

Matthew Desmond is a professor of social sciences at Harvard University and co-director of the Justice and Poverty Project. He is the author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in The American City.
