City Creeps Up to Northland Ranch

Kansas City, MO – When cattle rancher Gordon Philip left his native Scotland nearly a half a century ago for the heartland of America, he didn't intend to go to an urban place, but the city sort of came to him. KCUR's Ty Chandler stopped by his Northland ranch recently, where Philip reflected on the changes to his once rural community.

On Cookingham Drive near Highway 169 to Gordon Philip's farm, for-sale signs are abundant. First, for brand new homes priced under three thousand dollars in sub-divisions that are still being built, one sits just at the edge of Philip's property. And then there are the for-sale signs you see on large plots of rural undeveloped land, perhaps a sign that the agricultural way of life that was prevalent in this part of town is in jeopardy.

Gordon Philip raises about one thousand head of cattle in Northern Platte and Clay County in Kansas City.
