Shortly after news broke on Wednesday of his nomination to a State Department ambassadorship, Gov. Brownback tweeted "Religious Freedom is the first freedom. The choice of what you do with your own soul. I am honored to serve such an important cause."

After months of speculation, news broke Wednesday evening that Pres. Donald Trump nominated Kansas' governor as ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom. The appointment requires Senate approval.
