Baby Steps

A newborn changes everything (like sleep schedules — or, rather, lack thereof). And if you're a working mom, you're also dealing with work-life balance, finding a place to pump and more.

We take a look at maternity leave in and around KC with an HR expert, a former lactation consultant and local moms.

Guests:

  • Stacie Engelmann, President, The Society for Human Resources Management of Greater Kansas City (SHRM-KC)
  • Rebecca Pryor, lactation consultant, La Leche League from 1987-2007, mother of three
  • Amber Smith, working mother of one
  • Samantha Holk, self-employed mother of two

People don't make cameos in news stories; the human story is the story, with characters affected by news events, not defined by them. As a columnist and podcaster, I want to acknowledge what it feels like to live through this time in Kansas City, one vantage point at a time. Together, these weekly vignettes form a collage of daily life in Kansas City as it changes in some ways, and stubbornly resists change in others.
