Journalists: Here’s a rare opportunity.
Public radio is growing. NPR’s audience has steadily increased, and member stations such as KCUR 89.3 have added hundreds of new reporters in recent years. Last spring, a public opinion study found that NPR was the #1 news brand in the country, and the most loved and most trusted brand in news.
NPR and its member stations want our newsrooms to reflect the diversity of our country, to make sure our listeners hear all the voices of their communities. We want a broader array of reporters applying for our jobs and contributing to our on-air and digital platforms.
To that end, KCUR 89.3, is offering a free, two-day intensive introduction to public radio journalism for experienced professionals who might be interested in learning more about our branch of the industry. All journalists are welcome, and we especially hope to see applications from journalists of color.
Friday and Saturday, November 3 and 4 KCUR 89.3 FM, 4825 Troost, Kansas City, Missouri 8:30 a.m.: coffee, fruit, Danish and socializing 9 a.m.-5 p.m. – training sessions; box lunch provided
We’ll spend the first day orienting you to the basics:
- the philosophies and best practices of storytelling with sound and public radio journalism;
- how radio journalism differs from print, television and digital-first platforms;
- the challenges and joys of radio, according to print reporters who’ve made the transition.
We’ll spend the second day introducing you to our cool but intimidating equipment. You’ll get a taste of:
- studio and field equipment and recording techniques;
- writing for radio;
- editing software and sound-mixing techniques.
At the very least, you’ll leave with a sense of new possibilities. Whether you’re interested in broadening your skill set, starting a podcast or pursuing a career change, you’ll have new resources.
