Abraham Lincoln: Fast & Loose With Civil Liberties?
By Stephen Steigman and Steve Kraske
The Civil War tested the U.S. Constitution in ways unseen before or since. Civil liberties were challenged and presidential powers stretched in President Abraham Lincoln’s efforts to save the nation.
Thursday on Up to Date, Steve Kraske talks with Pennsylvania State University Civil War history professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Mark Neely, Jr. whose new book, Lincoln and the Triumph of a Nation, argues that Lincoln’s interpretation of the Constitution was well-suited to the stresses of wartime.
HEAR MORE: Mark Neely, Jr. speaks Thursday evening at 6:30 at the Kansas City Library Plaza branch, 4801 Main Street, Kansas City, Mo. A 6 p.m. free reception precedes the event. Click here for more information and to RSVP for the event.
