Calvin Arsenia, an arty singer-songwriter and harpist, has been a panelist on Up to Date's "Best Kansas City Music of 2015" and "Best Kansas City Music of 2016 ... So Far" shows. This week, however, Arsenia releases his own record.
3 reasons we're listening to Calvin Arsenia this week:
1. Arsenia sings and plays harp, banjo, guitar, ukulele and keyboards on Catastrophe, which also features contributions from prominent area musicians including violinist Coleen Dieker, trumpeter Clint Ashlock, pianist Mark Lowrey and bassist Jeff Harshbarger.
2. Lowrey and other elite Kansas City musicians will be in Arsenia's band for Tuesday's show. The cover charge includes a digital download code for Catastrophe.
3. He was still finalizing the mix late last week, so we'll show you this video of Arsenia performing for KCUR's "Something to Watch" series in August:
Calvin Arsenia releases Catastrophe on Tuesday, November 15 at The RecordBar; 1520 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri, 64108; 816-7753-5207. He has pledged that his performance will conclude by 10 p.m. Jametatone opens, and the evening concludes with a DJ set by Shane Borth, the violinist for Quixotic.
Bill Brownlee’s writing appears weekly in The Kansas City Star and Ink magazine. He blogs about Kansas City’s jazz scene at Plastic Sax.
