$3 Million Settlement In Death Of Impaired Man

A mentally  impaired man who was allegedly shot and killed by a South Kansas City store clerk figures into a $3 million court settlement today.

According to first accounts in The Kansas City Star, the dead man’s parents will share in the judgment, while none paying take blame for what happened.

Three companies connected to the convenience store near Bannister and Drury agreed with a Jackson County Circuit Judge on terms of the settlement.

Frederick Jones Jr. was 21 years old and shot in 2010 after a struggle inside the store.  Jones was schizophrenic.

Court pleadings said Jones was shocked with a taser before being shot twice and he later died.

The alleged gunman, regular store clerk Akbar Rana, had moved to India before being charged with voluntary manslaughter.

The Jackson County prosecutor has said there are moves to have Rana arrested in India.  Rana was 34 at the time of the shooting.

The owner of the station, Lakhani Commercial Corporation, agreed to pay the largest part of the settlement, amounting to $2.8 million.
