Registered nurses working at Menorah Medical Center "overwhelmingly" approved a new contract Tuesday morning at 12:30 am, according the National Nurses United spokesperson Julie Perry.

Prior to the approval, a spokesperson with HCA Midwest, which owns the hospital said in a statement say they were pleased with the agreement.

About two dozen women and children protested outside Research Medical Center on Monday afternoon in support of an obstetrician who was let go last month.

Lisa Cohen, a midwife from Lee's Summit, Mo., started a petition to reinstate Dr. Howard Schwartz that so far has drawn more than 1,300 signatures.

Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., has named Jacqueline DeSouza as its next CEO. DeSouza is currently CEO of Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Both hospitals are part of the HCA Midwest Health System.

In 2012, DeSouza was named one the Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare in America by Modern Healthcare magazine. She is the first woman and person of color to head the organization. She will start Feb. 10.

Maddie Major shouldn’t be alive today. The eight-year-old girl has been fighting a form of leukemia since she was three. Robyn Major, Maddie’s mother, says in spite of chemotherapy, radiation, and even a bone  marrow transplant, Maddie’s cancer kept coming back. 

“In August of 2012, she relapsed for the second time,” says Robyn Major. "It was at that time that we realized conventional therapies weren’t going to offer a cure for Maddie.”

For the first time, the federal government has released the prices that hospitals for the 100 most common inpatient procedures.  The prices for a given procedure can vary by tens of thousands of dollars.
