Zoo Campaign Kicks Off

Sep 27, 2011

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Supporters of the Kansas City Zoo kicked off their campaign asking Jackson and Clay County voters to approve a 1/8th cent sales tax in November.

Anita Gorman co-chairs the One Zoo for All campaign. She said the zoo could be another tourist attraction for Kansas City.

"We've got a great Nelson Atkins Museum. We've got a great Power and Light District. We've great National Museum for World War I. We just opened the performing arts center. We need a great, greater zoo," said Gorman.

That greater zoo would include a new penguin exhibit and revamped big cat and giraffe areas.

Backers of the 14 million dollar a year tax proposal had also petitioned to get it on the ballot in Platte County but were turned down by that county's commissioners. The issue is now in court.
