Treating Mental Illness with Fewer Resources

http://stream.publicbroadcasting.net/production/mp3/kcur/local-kcur-951509.mp3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mental health services in the Kansas City region have endured major cuts in public funding over the past few years. Both Kansas and Missouri are dealing with tight budget situations again this year, and are looking to further scale back mental health funding. Up to Date's Steve Kraske recently sat down with William Kyles, of Comprehensive Mental Health Services, and David Wiebe, of Johnson County Mental Health Center, to talk about the situation and what it means for area residents in need of treatment.

Click here to listen to Up to Date's entire show that day, including Steve Kraske's conversation with former First Lady Rosalynn Carter about her new book, Within Our Reach: Ending the Mental Health Crisis.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
