The police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the Royals finally making it back to the world series, intense races for governor and the U.S. senate in Kansas, 2014 was a year of big news on both sides of the state line.

On this edition of Up to Date, Steve Kraske and the Media Critics break down area news coverage. They look at how national and foreign media covered major stories, and they bring us their take on the most over-reported and under-reported news of the year.

Guests:

  • Pam Fine is the Knight Chair for News, Leadership and Community and a professor of journalism at the University of Kansas.
  • Derek Donovan is the Kansas City Star's public editor and ombudsman.
  • Donna Vestal is the Director of Content Strategy at KCUR and the supervising editor of Harvest Public Media.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
