Kansas City, MO – Local leaders put in another push for building a regional jail in Jackson County. KCUR's Maria Carter reports.

One of Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders's top priorities has been to build a jail that could house prisoners from the county and local cities and towns. Today (Monday), he met with Republican Sam Graves, who represents parts of Eastern Jackson County in the US house. Sanders says some 18 cities and towns in the county are already paying to house prisoners elsewhere.

Sanders: Use the existing dollars that are out there and with the help of the federal government we can build that facility and do it and make it revenue neutral for everybody. We can do more with the same.

Sanders and Graves talked about the possibility of housing federal prisoners at the current facility downtown.
