Offices Evacuated In Downtown KC After Suspected Bomb Threat

Bigstock

A bomb-sniffing dog reportedly detected some type of explosives in the car of a man who walked into a Kansas City state building Friday questioning whether or not his name was on the terrorist watch list.

Update 5:07 p.m.: KCTV-5 reports that the "FBI said Friday afternoon that no explosives were found and there is no threat to the public after a scare in downtown Kansas City." Read the FBI's official statement here.

Update 3:18 p.m.: The Kansas City Star reports that the man has been tentatively identified by authorities as Wahed Moharam.

The Star reports, "(Moharam was) known to many Kansas Citians as 'helmet man,' once a regular attendee at Chiefs’ games. His tickets were revoked out of safety concerns in 2003 because he was in the federal witness protection program for testifying in the first World Trade Center bombing."

Some sources are reporting that the man entered the building and shouted, "Why am I on the terrorist watch list?" Police confirmed the man is indeed on the watch list, the Kansas City Star reports.

KCTV-5 reports that the man entered the building at 13th St. and Holmes, which was subsequently partially evacuated, at around noon Friday.

The bomb and arson squad inspected the man's car. The bomb-sniffing dogs reportedly gave a positive indication for the existence of explosives.

Officials closed the exit from Interstate 70 to 13th Street and blocked off 12th and 13th streets between Cherry and Charlotte.
