Kansas City, Mo. – Kansas City, Missouri moved one notch closer to annexing 316 Northland acres near Platte City into its boundaries Wednesday when an annexation proposal was approved by a city council committee.
There definitely is opposition to the annexation requested by Tomahawke Ridge developer Tim Dougherty. He wants to build 657 single-family homes in the area around Highway 92 and North Winan Road over the next 20 years.
Councilman Ed Ford sponsored the annexation proposal. Responding to the opposition of Platte County Commissioner Jim Plunkett, Ford commented, "My position on this might be completely different on this if I was a county commissioner and we were talking about a development in unincorporated Platte County, because they are not equipped to provide the police, fire and other city services."
But some council members, like John Sharp and Bill Skaggs wonder if the city can afford to provide those services that far north.
The plan cleared the Planning and Zoning Committee by a 3-2 vote.
Ford isn't sure he can muster the seven needed votes when in a full legislative session.
