In Kansas City, Democrat Emmanuel Cleaver, facing Jacob Turk, held on to his seat for the fifth district. Republican Sam Graves beat challenger Sara Jo Shettles to represent northwest Missouri. In St Louis, Democrats Russ Carnahan and Lacy Clay and Republican Todd Akin all will return to Capitol Hill after topping challengers in the opposing party. In rural areas, Kenny Hulshof won a sixth term in his northeast Missouri District and Jo Ann Emerson kept her seat in the southeast part of the state. Republican Roy Blunt kept his seat in the southwest corner of the state, but with Democrats gaining a majority, he will no longer be majority whip. Ike Skelton stands to gain from the Democratic take over. Skelton was re-elected to serve a 16th term and stands to be elevated from ranking member to chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
