Loyal Opposition: Democrats Name Ethics, Education As Top Priorities

Jan 8, 2018

It's a Republican season in the Missouri General Assembly. The GOP controls the House and Senate with veto-proof majorities, and Republican Governor Eric Greitens is working hard to advance a conservative agenda. But Democrats press on, seeking to influence legislation where they can and, sometimes, taking their case directly to the people.

In this episode of Statehouse Blend Missouri, the House Democratic leader names her priorities for the year ahead — the last year of her term. Rep. Gail McCann Beatty calls for ethics enforcement, especially in the case of a legislator who made casual social media reference to lynching, and for new limits on campaign finance. And she predicts a tough fiscal year as tax cut proposals abound even as the budget for education, transportation and social services looks to be tighter than ever. And as for her future plans? McCann Beatty isn't ruling anything out.
