LISTEN: Poet Marcus Myers On The Power Of Silence

Laura Spencer
/
KCUR

Poet Marcus Myers says he started to get serious about his writing about a decade ago, when he turned 30 — and set his sights on publishing in literary magazines. Myers and poet Brian Clifton now co-edit Bear Review, an online journal of poetry and micro prose.

A teacher of gifted and talented students at Northgate Middle School in Kansas City, Mo., Myers is also a parent to a five-year-old, Audrey. Right after she was born, he says, his poem "Quiet Project" was inspired by his silent commute.

"She was crying quite a bit," Myers recalls. "I just felt completely surrounded by noise at all times, and the only quiet time I had was on the drive home, from the Northland to Midtown Kansas City."

All of our WORD readings, including bonus tracks by some poets, are archived on SoundCloud.

Kansas City is known for its style of jazz, influenced by the blues, as the home of Walt Disney’s first animation studio and the headquarters of Hallmark Cards. As one of KCUR’s arts reporters, I want people here to know a wide range of arts and culture stories from across the metropolitan area. I take listeners behind the scenes and introduce them to emerging artists and organizations, as well as keep up with established institutions.
