LISTEN: Kelly Cannon On Remembering The Light Of Childhood Naptime

Kelly Cannon

Kelly Cannon fell in love with writing in third grade, after she won a poetry competition. This poem, "Chiaroscuro," was inspired by a painting of a man sitting on a bed looking out a window. It reminded her of taking naps when she was a child.

"There’s something so different about going to sleep during the day. The light is so different," Cannon says. "As a child, that made an impression on me. And I would look up and I would see the light coming in through the blinds in streaks, and I would see the dust as it kind of swirled through those streaks in the light. It was a memory that stuck with me and when I saw that painting it brought it all back and I started this poem."

All of our WORD readings, including bonus tracks by some poets, are archived on SoundCloud.

A free press is among our country’s founding principles and most precious resources. As director of content-journalism at KCUR, I want everyone in our part of America to know we see them and we’re listening. I work to make sure the stories we tell and the conversations we convene reflect our complex realities, informing and inspiring all of us to meet the profound challenges of our time.
