Kansas City, MO –

  • The Kansas City, Missouri City Council approved further study of creating a new convention hotel, an ordinance to control nuisance properties and updating the city's anti-discrimination ordinance to include gender identity. The council also took a unanimous stand against a proposed Missouri Constitutional amendment members said would end its affirmative action programs.
  • The Johnson County Commission voted 4 to 3 to go ahead and pay for the special prosecutors Phill Kline appointed in the Paul Morrison investigation. But Kline will have to wait till April 28 for a judge's decision on whether the State can authenticate abortion records in his case against Planned Parenthood.
  • The Missouri Senate passed an illegal immigration bill that bars employers from hiring undocumented workers, requires police to check the immigration status of those they arrest, and blocks state grants to cities with sanctuary policies.
  • The Kansas Senate voted to override Governor Sebelius' veto of a bill authorizing two coal-fired power plants. The issue now goes to the House where it's unclear whether supporters can muster a two-thirds majority.
