KC History: Waldo & The Westport Presbyterian Church

Next time on Central Standard Friday, join historian Monroe Dodd for the history of the Waldo neighborhood with LaDene Morton, author of The Waldo Story.

The Waldo neighborhood has taken quite a journey from a patch of the Santa Fe Trail to a vibrant area with thriving local businesses.  Since 1841, it’s been a battlefield, a railroad hub, a border town, a suburb, and an urban hotspot.

Then, in the later half of our program, we learn about the history of the Westport Presbyterian Church with Reverend Scott Myer. He's only the 5th pastor the church has had since 1893 -- just think about that! On December 29th, 2011, the church suffered a disastrous fire. We'll hear about the efforts to rebuild and preserve this historic site.

MEET THE AUTHOR:
LeDene Morton will be speaking at The Plaza Library (4801 Main St) on Wednesday, July 18 at 6:30pm. You can also see her at the Barnes & Noble Country Club Plaza (420 W 47th St) on Saturday, July 21st at 10am.

WESTPORT PRESBYTERIAN FUNDRAISER:
The Westport Presbyterian Church will host “Poems That Soar, Laugh and Sing,” a benefit performance for the church’s fire recovery fund, at 3 p.m.  Sunday, June 17, at the Villa of Kansas City, 4120 Baltimore. Kansas City actor Walter Coppage, singer Pam Gregory and poet and pastor Rev. Scott Myers will perform a series of poems written by Myers. A suggested donation of $10 is welcome.

GUESTS:
LaDene Morton, The Waldo Story
