The state of Kansas currently has a 19 percent tax on cell phone and wireless service. That's the tenth-highest rate in the nation. Scott Mackey is an economist who's been studying those tax rates for a consulting firm called KSE Partners.

“At the top end of the scale are Nebraska, Washington, New York, Florida, and Illinois.  In those five states, taxes are as much as 25 percent,”

The states with the lowest taxes on wireless service are Nevada and Oregon, where residents pay closer to 7 percent. But Mackey says legislation is pending in Congress to make cell phone taxes more equitable across the country.
