Kansas Citians Share Their Best And Worst Summer Jobs
As the hunt for summer jobs heats up, we asked Kansas Citians to walk down memory lane this week.
Kansas Citians shot back a plethora of of cool summer assignments, from brewery tour guide to acid rain researcher.
They fondly remember more typical posts, too, like lifeguard and ice cream scooper, according to feedback we received in our “Tell KCUR” question of the week.
But for every blissful memory, we also heard about some less-than-ideal summer employment opportunities, like hospital janitor, soap scraper and assembly line worker.
One of Kansas City’s biggest players in seasonal employment, amusement park Worlds of Fun was a common contender.
April Graham put Worlds of Fun into the best category, citing her time working with exotic plants in the park’s greenhouses.
“I worked alone frequently and loved the feeling of inner peace and strength gained from early mornings among the plants, heat, humidity, and solitude,” Graham tell us on Facebook.
In comparison, many of the “worst jobs” stemmed from manual labor.
Deany Goode lamented her worst job at Burger’s Smokehouse, where she spent a summer “placing bacon on yellow cardboard on an assembly line with no one to talk to.”
Tell KCUR is part of an initiative to engage the community and shine a light on your experiences and opinions. We’ll ask a new question every week and then share your feedback on the air and online. See our arsenal of questions — and your answers.
