Kansas City, MO – A new Internal Revenue Service facility near Union Station is part of a consolidation plan, reducing the number of places where tax forms are processed. KCUR's Maria Carter reports.

The 1.1 million square foot IRS campus will consolidate operations now in South Kansas City and Overland Park into one facility, across the street from Union Station. This is part of an overall plan reducing the number of IRS processing centers to three. Senator Kit Bond was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. He says the new facility plays an important role in downtown redevelopment.
Kit Bond: "We are connecting Crown Center to the Freight House district and to the future Performing Arts District. We're revitalizing a major segment of downtown Kansas City."
The IRS center will employ 3,000 people throughout the year and as many 8,000 during peak tax season.
