Interview with Temple Grandin

Kansas City, MO – Temple Grandin has probably done more than anyone in the country to help people understand what autism is. Grandin has high functioning autism, sometimes called Aspergers Syndrome, or an autism spectrum disorder.

But she also has a Bachelors and Masters degree in animal science, and a PhD. She developed an animal handling system that has become standard worldwide. It's a different kind of chute than traditionally used in the meat industry to transport animals and it not only promotes animal welfare but corporate profit as well. Today, Grandin consults for the meat industry on facility design and animal handling nationwide.

Temple Grandin was in Kansas City recently to participate in a seminar about how to transition people with high functioning autism, Asperger's Syndrome, and autism spectrum disorders into careers. She told KCUR's Laura Ziegler the most important thing for employers to understand is that people with these disabilities have different strengths and learn in different ways.
