How Human Sex Life Compares To The Birds And The Bees

Penguin Group (Canada)

The publisher of Nature's Nether Regions begins the book summary this way: "What’s the easiest way to tell species apart? Check their genitals."

On Tuesday's Up to Date, evolutionary biologist and author Menno Schilthuizen takes Steve Kraske through "the ways the shapes and functions of genitalia have been molded by complex Darwinian struggles".  They'll examine what the sexual organs of other species tell us about the evolutionary process, biodiversity, and ourselves.  Learn how we humans rate when our sex lives are compared to that of animals.

Guest:

  • Menno Schilthuizen is a Dutch evolutionary biologist, ecologist, and permanent research scientist at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, the Netherlands.  He is the author of Nature’s Nether Regions: What the Sex Lives of Bugs; Birds; and Beasts Tell Us About Evolution, Biodiversity, and Ourselves.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
As senior producer of Up To Date, I want our listeners to hear familiar and new voices that shine light on the issues and challenges facing the myriad communities KCUR serves, and to expose our audiences to the wonderful and the creative in the Kansas City area. Just as important to me is an obligation to mentor the next generation of producers to ensure that the important conversations continue. Reach me at alexanderdk@kcur.org.
