Kansas City, MO – Kansas Congressman Dennis Moore recently introduced a bill to move health records into a national, electronic network. His proposal aimed at reducing medical errors is quickly gaining bipartisan support. KCUR's Kelley Weiss reports.

Congressman Dennis Moore is taking a different approach to electronic or e-records. The House Bill he drafted gives individuals the option to enroll in the nationwide e-records system for a fee of less than $5 dollars a month. By doing this it would allow patients to manage their records and authorize doctors to view their medical charts online from anywhere in the country. But, Moore says the twist to his legislation is the built in protections for patient privacy.
Dennis Moore: "The patient has total control of what information from what doctors goes into the account and more importantly what comes out."
For example, Moore says when visiting a dermatologist you could choose to leave your mental health history off that record. Moore says in the coming months he hopes to move the legislation forward - he says the other three members of the Kansas House Delegation are co-sponsors of the bill.
