Funkhouser Enters Mayor's Race

By Maria Carter

Kansas City, MO – Another person with strong ties to local government is joining the race for Kansas City mayor. KCUR's Maria Carter reports.

Mark Funkhouser retired as city auditor on Friday, and today he announced he's looking for another job at city hall mayor. Funkhouser has been a critic of Kansas City's growing debt, much of that for downtown development. He says the city needs to be a better job of providing basic city services and stop focusing on large projects aimed at making the city world class.

Funkhouser: "I'd like for us to be metropolitan class. You know, the heck to competing with Paris. I'd like us to compete more effectively with Prairie Village."

Funkhouser faces a crowded field including five city council members, former Jackson County Executive Katheryn Shields, and a handful of business people.
