Up To Date's Indie, Foreign & Doc Critics' 'Three To See,' June 5-7

'Sunshine Superman' explores the origins of base jumping.

From a nonagenarian with style to an independent Victorian lady, films on area screens this week have a wide variety of topics. Up to Date's indie, foreign and documentary film critics can help you navigate the many movie listings to find one that fits you.

Cynthia Haines

Ex Machina, R

  • A computer programmer is hired to test a new form of artificial intelligence.

Far From the Madding Crowd, PG-13

  • Three suitors pursue an independent Victorian woman.

Seymour: An Introduction, PG

  • Inspirational documentary by Ethan Hawke about 88-year-old pianist Seymour Bernstein

Steve Walker

Iris, PG-13

  • Think about the Metropolitan Museum of Art: The current exhibit they have at the Costume Institute is about China. They did an exhibit just about this woman and her sense of style.

Far from the Madding Crowd, PG-13

  • As a headstrong landowner, Carey Mulligan shines in a lush adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel.

Sunshine Superman, PG

  • We get to jump with these people through the technology they employ. It's not for acrophobics.

Bob Butler

Love & Mercy, PG-13

  • You have two actors, Paul Dano… and John Cusack… They so dig deep into what made this guy tick.

Ex Machina, R

  • It’s science fiction, but it’s almost not. It’s so close to being the real thing. It’s a very twisty and gnarly love story. It reminds me of The Island of Dr. Moreau.

Iris, PG-13

  • I love this movie, because it dares you, the viewer, to look in your closet, declare this the most boring crap you ever saw in your life and go get something gaudy.

Our critics' guilty pleasure picks of the week:

  • Cynthia: Pitch Perfect 2
  • Steve: Mad Max
  • Bob: Mad Max
