Up To Date's Indie, Foreign & Doc Critics' 'Three To See,' July 1-3

http://www.nutsthefilm.com/

You may not be able to go out and blow stuff up with the same vim and vigor, but that doesn't mean you have to let the wet forecast put a damper on your Independence Day weekend. Up To Date's indie, foreign and documentary film critics have a few recommendations to keep you entertained — and dry! — while the rain passes through.

Cynthia Haynes

NUTS!, Not rated

  • Dr. John Romulus Brinkley was an eccentric/flimflam man who made a fortune "curing" impotence with goat gonads. Need we say more?

Love & Friendship, PG

  • Kate Beckinsale plays Jane Austen’s Lady Susan, a young English widow who uses rich men as a vehicle for her climb toward wealth and status.

Genius, PG-13

  • A dramatic look at the life of editor Max Perkins, who discovered F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, and his tumultuous relationship with Thomas Wolfe and his mistress.

Steve Walker

Love & Friendship, PG

  • A wry comedy of manners based on Jane Austen's novella Lady Susan, featuring a delicious Kate Beckinsale as a diabolical snob.

The Lobster, R

  • Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz in a dark, absurdist tale about a near future where single people must partner up lest they be turned into animals.

Genius, PG-13

  • This exuberantly cerebral biopic features Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman as, respectively, esteemed editor Max Perkins, his frenetic protégé Thomas Wolfe, and Wolfe's unbalanced mistress.
